Philosophy of Yoga at Poorna:

Yoga taught at Poorna is in the lineage of T Krishnamacharya and TKV Desikachar

Our Yoga is strictly secular and non-sectarian.

We defer to the philosophy of Samkhya upon which the Yoga Sutras are based.

This philosophy is determinately silent on the idea of God. We follow the option of Yoga-without-God that Patanjali offers in his Yoga Sutras.

Spirituality, for us, is not external to the body but part-and-particle of the material body itself.  it lies in recognizing the root-essence of matter, i.e. the body, and our practice aims at tuning into the sensitivity that constitutes this root-essence.
Our practice does not strive for self-perfection, that is not our ideal, but aims to provide a distilling process that may usher the practitioner into a consciousness-expansive dimension of sensitivity.

Our dynamic practice is both rigorous and meditative.

Breath-work is integral to our method.  We follow the dictum of T Krishnamacharya, according to whom, “till such time that body, mind and breath are not working in tandem, it is not yoga.”

We freely draw from the Patanjala, Tantra and Hatha traditions of Yoga, and incorporate an array of techniques such as mudra, mantra, bandha, nyasa, dhyana and dharana (visualization).

Self-observation is key to our practice which we liken to making an experiment. We practice for the purpose of observing its subtle aftereffects, just as we would first perform and then observe the results of an experiment from one-remove, without projecting any preconceived ideas or ideals upon it.

Our aim is for the material body to reveal its own truths.
